Primal art has a feature that sets it apart from "modern art" or "contemporary art" or even "classical art" - namely that it is from a place where art and magic were one and the same and had not yet been broken apart. Art was magic, magic was art and as all art served a magical purposes, so did all magical purposes serve art itself. The logical next step from 1st Art is the hand print on the cave wall, and then to go on and put other things on the cave wall as well.
So it made sense to make a cave painting at this juncture.
Four days and five nights ...
If anyone ever tells you doing art is for lazy people, don't believe them ...
Art is a very personal journey. And every so often, there are these priceless experiences that one really can't put into words. I guess that's the difference between painting and sculpting and writing about after the fact ...
At any rate, whilst working on the "Damian Hirst" symbol painting, I had a moment of revelation ...
Alright so no painting is painting itself here literally. A canvas jumping out of the cupboard, sticking out it's little arms and legs, undoing the paint tube and with squeals of pleasure, beginning to apply Alizarin Crimson to themselves in long, slow strokes ... ;->
What I'm talking about here is a process by which some paintings "arrive" - like Gold Fall.
I love The Genius Symbols. They have brought immeasurable joy into my life, I have just had such a good time making different symbol sets, and eventually, I made a symbol game board, an acrylic painting on canvas.
I use it for special purposes and always regretted I couldn't take it with me when I went away to a conference or such; and when I came across a company who prints custom art scarves the other day, the The Genius Symbol Mandala literally jumped into my mind. But before we got started on that, there was the vector version to be done ...
Some time ago, I sent someone a The Gift and it was a Seahorse. First time that I can recall I had any dealings with this particular creature or metaphor, as the case may be ...
Here is my seahorse drawing, the symbol hybrid, and a seahorse vector version, plus a couple of cute animated seahorses and a seahorse to print out for coloring in.
I gave a short 15 minute presentation on The Genius Symbols at the AMT conference last year. Normally I draw the symbols live to show how simple they are and ask the audience to guess what they might be to demonstrate they are easy to learn, so that's what I did. This caused a certain gentleman to give me a set of canvases for Christmas and the idea/task to make a symbol set for group demonstrations. I did and here they are.
A commission for an August birthday - Leo The Lion.
Inspired by Taurus, my second Star Sign Symbol Hypbrid painting.
The book of fairy tales, The Golden Horse, originally had for every story a symbol hypbrid painting as an illustration, a plate at the beginning of each new fairy tale.
But as full color publishing was deemed to costly by the publishing company, a different set of images was ordered from another artist instead. Now, with the publication of the Kindle & Ipad version of The Golden Horse, the original images in glorious technicolor have taken their rightful place alongside the stories.
Once in a while, it seems my marps want to do their thing.
This little painting is one of those occasions ...
After spending the summer watching StarGate SG1 (all ten seasons) StarGate Atlantis (five seasons) and Stargate Universe (1 1/2 seasons) it just had to be done - a The Genius Symbols Stargate picture/painting ... :-)
A magic symbol painting, evoking the power of snake.
Snake is Power, Life force, Sexual Potency; but also the mysterious, magic, the otherworldly, and of course, snake is the symbol for healing, and rising enlightenment.
Goddess energy magic symbol painting.
Goddess evokes the power of the female, both as a practical manifestation of the Goddess on and in Earth, but also as the energy of goddess, the deep knowing of ancient secrets, other worlds and wider time.
Two Dragons painting for a wedding gift. The 2 dragons form a heart.
There is also a poem on the back.
In 2006, I became fascinated by Bob Ross and his wet on wet oil painting technique. And his intensely hypnotic deliveries and demonstrations, to be sure.
I tried this for myself and it was really quite wonderful on many different levels; I learned a lot about many, many things in the process and when it was done, painted a portrait of Bob Ross as a personal Thank You from me.
I've never painted a portrait before, never mind in oils, or even drawn pictures of people's faces; that wasn't my thing. Still, did the best I could and god bless, Bob, it's from the heart. xxx
